A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its role in public projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
