"When are you speaking to the band?" a text reads. "My request was to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

However, there remains a key snag: The sender also desires to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are not alone. Several famous admirers have publicly petitioned for the position.

The evidence suggests a special quality is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the most iconic ensembles, they're a inseparable gang. Their videos repeatedly feature them marching in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such pure exuberance you inevitably think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls told us and said, 'After your show, I bought a guitar'," states Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the ultimate compliment. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage others to form a group."

Award Nod

The band are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the lists every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," continues Alana. "However we're just grateful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The project emerged from a period of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that odd liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The themes track endings and goodbyes. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That newfound toughness required a new sound – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Camaraderie

The band's openness shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

A former partner left Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

A Confident Path

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their position in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an international following.

But Haim will always be their number one focus.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It's like no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still going strong."
